I feel compelled to jump in on Christopher's comment that Shiro is a complete asshole in the first episode of WDYEY (since I recommended the show on the Very Special Okinawa episode). He is indeed a total bag of dicks! But that is exactly in line with the manga. Go back to the first volume and remind yourself of how much Shiro has subtly grown as a person over the course of twenty-some volumes. He's so mean to Kenji in the first chapter! The way Yoshinaga softens his rough edges and makes him a better person and partner to Kenji is one of the enduring appeals of this series for me.
