MANGA: Search and Destroy Ch. 13
SPOILERS: Volume 3 kicks off with a bang, and you'll really, really want to have finished reading Volume 2 before jumping in here.
Hello everyone, and welcome back to the first chapter of Atsushi Kaneko’s Search and Destroy Volume 3, based on the manga Dororo by Osamu Tezuka. As a reminder, we’re making the first chapter of a new volume free to read for all subscribers, but future chapters from this volume will be locked and only available for paid subscribers. Also, paid subscribers get access to CBZ and PDFs of each chapter, that they can keep. Those are all that’s after the paywall in this post.
This is another big chapter of Search and Destroy, and frankly all of the chapters in volume 3 are longer than usual, making volume 3 a whopper. It really feels like Kaneko-sensei was trying to cram in a ton of extra ideas before the series came to an end with volume 3, and it makes each of these chapters absolutely thrilling! It’s also been a ton of additional work for our creative team of translator Ben Applegate and letterer Phil Christie, and I thank them for their hard work here! Otsukaresamadesu.
Since we finished up serializing Volume 2, Fantagraphics actually released Volume 1 in print! You can buy it now at: Fantagraphics | Amazon.com | Barnes & Noble | Indigo | WHSmith | Books-A-Million and really good local comic book shops, too! Please do, so Fanta will wanna keep making more weird/fun manga with us.
We’re so completely thrilled with how the print edition of volume 1 came out, and the reviews have been phenomenal too. We also commissioned an original introduction for volume 1, written by Frederico Anzalone, and we’ve shared it here on Substack. It adds some great content to Kaneko-sensei’s oeuvre and the creation of this series in particular. Please check it out:
On a personal note (it’s Christopher btw), I did want to say that the feeling I get every week when putting together these chapters for Substack is… thrilling. Even having read the series already, seeing it a chapter at a time, the action, the horror, the huge revelations and the quiet moments, they hit again like the first time. Ben Applegate was saying something similar as we were going through some of the upcoming chapters with the revelations giving him chills. This is a great, great manga, and I remain incredibly proud of it grateful that I get to be on the team bringing it to you.
So that said, we’ll link all of the previous chapters below, make sure you’re caught up, and then jump into chapter 13 below.
