MANGA: Search and Destroy Ch. 00-01, by Atsushi Kaneko
Based on the manga "Dororo" by Osamu Tezuka
MSX: Mangasplaining Extra, in partnership with Fantagraphics Books, is proud to present Search and Destroy by Atsushi Kaneko, based on the manga Dororo by Osamu Tezuka. Beginning this week, we will serialize this title bi-weekly on the Mangasplaining Extra newsletter (alternating with another new work, Wandering Cat’s Cage by Akane Torikai). There will be 18 chapters (three volumes) of this work, and we will take breaks between each volume to run one-shots and other short works. The print editions will release beginning in early 2024 from Fantagraphics.
This first installment is free for all subscribers. Future chapters will only be available to paid subscribers of the newsletter. (Paid subscribers can also find pdf and cbd uploads at the end of this email).
We’re tremendously proud to bring you this incredible tour-de-force manga here at MSX. A mix of action, social commentary, and rage, creator Kaneko is working firmly in the Tezuka-sensei’s milieu with this work, while also bringing his own internationally influenced aesthetic to the fore to create an incredibly fresh take on the venerable five-decade-plus original manga.
We will have a lot more to say about the incredible manga-ka Atsushi Kaneko in the weeks to come, and we will also dive into the original work Dororo, and how Search and Destroy came to be. But for now, let’s simply share this special message from Atsushi Kaneko, to you, Mangasplaining readers, on the publication of this first chapter in English.
“This is a story about anger. Come share your anger with me.”
Atsushi Kaneko, creator, ‘Search and Destroy’

We also thank agent Aki Yanagi and Fantagraphics’ Eric Reynolds for their help in licensing this title, Nick Spencer and Substack for helping to make this possible, and last but not least the incredible localization team of translator Ben Applegate and letter Phil Christie for helping to create a beautiful edition of Kaneko-sensei’s work. Speaking of, it looks great on the website and in the app!
Finally, our thanks to you readers, for allowing us to release this incredible story in English.
And now, Search and Destroy, Chapters 0 and 1.
